SHE'S just your regular jeans and T-shirt kind of girl. Fledgling fashion designer Rachel Bilson knows what she likes - her go-to outfit is a pair of vintage Levi's and an Alternative white V-neck - and she hopes you like it, too. Her design debut - the capsule collection Edie Rose by DKNY Jeans - launches this weekend at Macy's Herald Square.
"I'm in awe of Rodarte because of how beautiful, creative and artistic they are. Obviously, my clothes aren't anything like that, but they're so inspiring," she says. We're guessing she means Rodarte.
"A friend of mine, Brian Reyes, is an amazing designer. And he says he is going to teach me how to sketch because I can't draw. So that's really exciting."
Artistic or not, Bilson's 15-piece menswear-inspired line is basic without being boring. T-shirts are accessorized with sewn-on sequin ties (near right, $39). The cropped black military-style jacket with faux patent leather accents and oversize buttons (far right, $98) works well as a fall layering piece. The denim and cotton dresses (far right, $69-$79) are casual and easy.
"I always admire Ashley Olsen's style. I think she dresses really well. And so does Mary-Kate," she says, citing the teeny-tiny twins as her style icons. "If I had to trade closets with anyone, it would definitely be with them." Sigh. Us, too.
Meet Bilson at 2 p.m. Saturday at Macy's Herald Square, where she will be signing autographs and hosting an Edie Rose by DKNY Jeans fashion show.
* Dirty 30: Diesel is getting older. And wiser. To celebrate the Italian denim brand's 30th birthday, head to Diesel boutiques uptown (770 Lexington Ave.; 212-308-0055) or downtown (1 Union Square West; 646-336-8552) on Oct. 10 to score the brand's limited-edition $50 jeans (4,000 pairs in the city, another 4,000 worldwide). You'll also get free tickets to the Rock and Roll Circus, featuring live performances by N.E.R.D., M.I.A., Hot Chip and Franz Ferdinand on Pier 3 in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Oct. 11.
* Letter press: Here're some conversation starters: "Hey Sexy Baby I Luv U Hun" emblazoned on a hat ($28) and "I believe in love" on a jumper ($118) - both at Kira Plastinina (509 Fifth Ave.; 212–953–4810).
* Broke in Brooklyn: We're feeling Clinton Van Gemert's "I can't afford to love NY" tees ($15 at icantaffordtoloveny.com), because, you know, we can't. Get one for you and one for your brokenhearted Wall Streeter, score a couple of 40s, then go sit on a stoop somewhere, engaged in deep contemplation.
* Girls with glasses: Glamour magazine is taking it old-school. October's issue (on newsstands Tuesday) comes with tear-out 3-D glasses for its multidimensional fashion and beauty pages. Our favorite: Rihanna's lashes in the Cover Girl ad.
* Hair's to you: Quell follicle freakouts with Frederic Fekkai's Ageless Créme Luxe Hair Treatment ($75 at Henri Bendel), formulated with rare orchid extract and proteins that help strengthen hair, prevent breakage and increase elasticity. Use it twice a week for three to five minutes after your normal shampoo/conditioner routine like we did, and you should see results in less than two weeks.
