We love treats and dessert. A sweet little snack is just the thing to enjoy during the day or after dinner. But most treats and desserts are full of too much sugar, or we just eat too many of them. You can satisfy your urge to snack - and that sweet tooth - in a healthy way.
Summertime means fresh, light treats. Today, Chef Justin serves up a fruity twist on a classic cereal-inspired treat, as well as a yummy parfait that uses healthy yogurt. Try making them both with an adult's help, and enjoy them as a mid-day snack or after-dinner dessert.
5 cups crispy cereal
3 tbls. butter
10 oz. miniature marshmallows
½ cup blueberries
½ cup raspberries
In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
Once the butter has melted, add and melt marshmallows.
Add crispy cereal and stir continuously until combined.
Coat a 13" x 9" pan with cooking spray, or use shortening.
Pour in the marshmallow and cereal mixture.
Add berries over top, and allow to cool for 1½ to 2 hours.
Cut into squares, and serve with favorite fruit juice.
Justin's tip: Try to have moist wipes available.
These Crispy treats are very tasty, but they
are also sticky.
Food groups: All berries are in the fruit group, and the cereal is in the grain group.
2 cups chopped fresh blueberries
1 cup fresh raspberries
1 cup fresh strawberries
1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
1 firm, medium banana, peeled and sliced
In dessert glass, layer blueberries, raspberries, yogurt, banana slices and strawberries.
Makes 4 servings.
Justin's tip: You can also add raisins or dates and sprinkle almonds on top.
