PHILADELPHIA - If the speculation proves true and David Wright is the Mets' lone All-Star representative, don't look for him in the Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium.
Wright finished second in the derby to Ryan Howard two years ago in Pittsburgh, and the third baseman wants that night to be the lasting memory of him in the competition.
"It's a good one-time thing," Wright said yesterday. "I can't see me one-upping what I did in Pittsburgh. I think I left it all in Pittsburgh."
The Mets will find out today how many of them will be chosen as reserves for the July 15 Midsummer Classic in The Bronx.
Jerry Manuel said yesterday he should have had the "take" sign on with pitcher Johan Santana at the plate in the fifth inning with a bases-loaded, no-out situation Friday. Rookie Phillies starter J.A. Happ got to 2-0 in the count before Santana subsequently took him off the hook by swinging at the next two pitches and popping out to the catcher. The Mets scored just twice in the inning, leaving the bases full in a game they went on to lose by one run.
Manuel said he is considering moving clean-up hitter Carlos Beltran to the No. 2 spot in the order so he can see more fastballs. Ryan Church was in the second spot last night.
After a 3-2 loss to the rival Phillies on Friday, the Mets dropped to 7-13 in games decided by one run going into last night's contest. They were 22-15 in that department in 2007.
