WAGNER METS ONLY ALL-STAR

WRIGHT UP FOR FINAL ROSTER SPOT

PHILADELPHIA -- The underachieving Mets had only closer Billy Wagner named to the NL All-Star team today, but David Wright still has a chance to make it to Yankee Stadium on July 15.

In a bit of a surprise, Wagner was tabbed by NL manager Clint Hurdle of the Rockies to be the Mets' representative over Wright, shortstop Jose Reyes and ace Johan Santana.

The Mets won't have a starter in the game because no position players finished first at their respective spots in the fan voting.

Wagner, who will make his fifth career All-Star trip and second in as many seasons, got the nod from Hurdle after notching 19 saves and a 1.85 ERA in his first 33 appearances.

The snub of everyone but Wagner and possibly Wright marks quite an All-Star comedown for the Mets, who had four players in last year's game in San Francisco and five in Pittsburgh the year before that.

Wright, though, could still join Wagner as a Met representative in the Mid-Summer Classic. That's because Major League Baseball is holding an open fan vote via mobile phones and mlb.com to decide the final spot on each 32-man roster. Wright is one of five candidates in that vote, results of which will be announced Thursday.

The other four candidates in the NL competing with Wright for the last spot are all outfielders: Pat Burrell (Phillies), Corey Hart (Brewers), Carlos Lee (Astros) and Aaron Rowand (Giants).

Wright, a two-time All-Star, began yesterday hitting .288 in 86 games while leading the Mets in homers (16), RBIs (66) and walks (54). He also tops the club in on-base percentage (.385) and slugging percentage (.508).

"It would obviously be an honor to go," Wright said before all but the final spot on each team was announced. "It's always very humbling and exciting to participate, especially with a chance to close out Yankee Stadium. That would be fantastic experience."

The Mets elevated first baseman Mike Carp to their 40-man roster today, increasing said roster to 34 players. Carp, 22, hit .299 with 17 homers and 72 RBIs in 134 games for Double-A Binghamton en route to being named an......
