The New York Dragons' season ended last night in a heartbreaker in Philadelphia.
They had a five-point lead in the final seconds of their Arena Football League Eastern Conference divisional playoff game when Soul quarterback Matt D'Orazio threw a short pass to Larry Brackens. He was tackled at the goal line, but managed to stretch his arm and the ball across the goal line as time expired. The play was reviewed and was ruled a touchdown after the referees ruled Brackens broke the plane of the goal line before he was tackled.
The Soul won 49-48 and advanced to the conference championship next week. It was the third time that the Soul have beaten New York this season, the other two victories coming in blowouts.
The Dragons, who had a 25-23 lead at halftime, were held scoreless in the third quarter. Quarterback Aaron Garcia completed 34 of 45 passes for 337 yards, with five touchdown passes and one interception. Receiver Kevin Swayne, the former Jet, caught all five touchdown passes and had a total of 166 receiving yards.
