Your editorial would have been more to the point if you had stated "UFT = Success" ("UFT v. Success," June 30).

Yes, we teachers evaluated Chancellor Joel Klein's performance as it relates to our work.

But test scores went up because of teachers' hard work and despite the topsy-turvy changes of curriculum under Klein's administration.

The 43 percent raise in salary under Klein is the result of Randi Weingarten's negotiations with a committee of 300 on behalf of the UFT members. If it had been Klein's way, we would have given back 43 percent.

Klein had zero to do with the success of the kids in my school. In fact, the more he stays away, the better we are.

My school's success is due to the simple fact that the teachers bust their butts every day.

One would think that The Post and Klein share a wallet. S. LeBan Queens

As a retiree from the NYC Department of Education who keeps in touch with many teachers in active service, I know that scores on standardized tests have improved only because teaching to the tests has become the major activity in our schools.

There is little or no time spent on cultural instruction, creative writing, discussion of issues or stimulation of critical thinking.
