An active-duty Army sergeant was shot dead early yesterday in a dispute over a woman at a Brooklyn Fourth of July barbecue, police and relatives said.

Kidson George, 27, was at the Flatbush house party at 1 a.m. when he began talking to the woman, said George's mom, Lystra Peters.

Another man took exception, pulled a gun and shot George twice in the chest, Peters said.

Cops said a third shot struck the woman, 27, in the right leg. The Trinidadian-born George was declared dead at the scene.

The woman, whose name was not released, was in stable condition last night at Kings County Hospital.

The gunman was still at large.

George, stationed at Fort Dix in New Jersey, served seven years in the Army but on weekends would go home to Cypress Hills to see his son, 7, and daughter, 5.

"He was a very loving and caring son," Peters said. "He was very giving."
