LIBS READY FOR MERCURY

The annual Fourth of July pyrotechnics were last night, but some more fireworks may be on tap tonight at the US Airways Center in Phoenix.

The Liberty visit the Mercury (8-7) there as the fourth stop of its five-game road trip. Led by Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter, who are the top two scorers in the WNBA, Phoenix is the best offensive team in the league.

"I don't think you can stop great players like Taurasi and Pondexter," head coach Pat Coyle said. "You just have to contest as many shots as possible."

But good news for the Libs, the Mercury is also the worst defensive team in the league, allowing 88.3 points per outing.

Phoenix's wide-open style suited the Liberty just fine when the two teams met at the Garden last month. Six players scored in double figures in the 105-72 rout, the Liberty's most impressive offensive performance of the season.
