Chris Duhon celebrated his July 4th by verbally committing to the Knicks, agreeing to terms on a two-year, roughly $6.5 million contract, his agent Kevin Bradbury told The Post today.

With Orlando unable to extend Duhon a formal offer until after the Magic explore the Corey Maggette situation, the Bulls backup point guard chose the Knicks, who courted him on the first day of free agency and extended him an offer immediately.

Bradbury said he's been told by the Knicks he will have every opportunity to be the starting point guard and is expected to compete with Stephon Marbury during training camp. At the very least, Duhon would be in position to start the following year when Marbury is expected to be gone. Duhon can't officially sign until July 9th. A source close to Donnie Walsh said Duhon's signing does not mean Marbury will be demoted or bought out.

Bradbury said a major factor was Duhon's fondness of playing in Mike D'Antoni's system. "You only get so many chances to get your game to the next level and to be able to be a starter,'' Bradbury said. "He's been told he'll be given every opportunity to win that job."
