NHL: Isles pick up Weight

The Islanders made their second free agent signing in two days yesterday, bringing in 37-year-old center Doug Weight. The veteran was inked to a one-year deal that could be worth $4 million. A year ago with the Ducks and Blues, he scored 10 goals.

* The Penguins signed the MVP finalist Evgeni Malkin to a five-year extension worth $43.5 million, a deal that will keep him under contract until 2013-14. . . . Marian Hossa signed a one-year contract with Detroit, and a person in the NHL told The Associated Press the deal is worth $7.45 million.

NBA: Sonics headed to Okla. City

The SuperSonics will move to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season as part of a settlement with the city of Seattle, ending a contentious relationship that resulted in a trial in which the judge was due to issue her ruling.

The settlement calls for Sonics owner Clay Bennett and the Professional Basketball Club LLC to pay up to $75 million to the city in exchange for the immediate termination of the KeyArena lease between the NBA team and the city.

* No. 2 pick Michael Beasley was struck in the chest by an inadvertent elbow during a defensive drill about 45 minutes into Miami's first summer-league workout session, and the No. 2 overall pick in last week's NBA draft was taken to a doctor for observation. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the move was strictly precautionary.

BLOTTER: Plea hearing for Montgomery

In Richmond, Va., Tim Montgomery, a former track star who had been scheduled for trial next week on heroin distribution charges, has opted for a plea hearing today.

SOCCER: Team USA women win

In Fredrikstad, Norway, midfielder Lindsay Tarpley scored an early goal, and the United States beat Norway 4-0 in a tune-up for the Olympic women's soccer tournament.

NFL: Chargers LB agrees to settle lawsuit

In San Diego, former Chargers linebacker Steve Foley agreed to settle his lawsuit against a police officer who shot him while off-duty two years ago and ended his pro football career.
