SLOOOOW WORK FOR 'BROWN'

In his first workout since he was eased in the June 7 Belmont Stakes, finishing dead last in his failed bid for the Triple Crown, Big Brown put the clockers at Aqueduct to sleep yesterday morning, going five furlongs in a slower-than-slow 1:06 3/5.

Going out about 5:45 a.m. with exercise rider Michelle Nevin in the saddle, the "Brown Bomber" went his first eighth in 14 1/5 seconds, the quarter-mile in 27 3/5, the half in 53 3/5, then came home in 13 seconds flat, before galloping out six furlongs in 1:21 1/5. If it were any other horse besides Big Brown, the work likely would be too slow to record.

"I didn't see a problem," trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said.

In the morning after the work, Dutrow said the notorious quarter-crack Big Brown suffered before the Belmont was "long gone."

The colt is scheduled to make his next start in the Aug. 3 Haskell at Monmouth Park.
