The Islanders moved to help their woeful power play last night, signing free agent defenseman Mark Streit to a five-year contract worth a reported $20.5 million.
The 30-year-old power-play specialist was third in the NHL among defensemen last year with 62 points while playing with Montreal. He also played for eight years professionally in his native Switzerland.
"Mark provides us with the stability on the blueline that we were looking for," said GM Garth Snow, whose team finished next to last on the power play last season.
