SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe will not step down, and Western critics who called the country's recent election a sham can "go hang," the longtime ruler's spokesman said yesterday.
The defiant comments raised doubts about efforts to persuade Mugabe to share power.
Leaders at the African Union summit are gently urging that he accept a power-sharing agreement with his rival.
Mugabe spokesman George Charamba had harsh words about Western pressure: "They can go hang. They can go and hang a thousand times."
