City Comptroller William Thompson fired a broadside yesterday at the NYPD, charging that "an alarming number" of guns seized in crimes have gone AWOL because of sloppy record-keeping by the Manhattan property-clerk division.

Thompson said division employees could not immediately find 94 - or 29 percent - of 325 guns and rifles picked by his office.

The comptroller, often mentioned as a mayoral candidate, said the weapons were eventually found, after several tries and weeks.

"Their system of controls of firearms is disorganized, antiquated and unreliable," he said.

In response, the NYPD said it is in the final stages of acquiring a $28 million computerized record system.
