When Gasper Moschera was one of the top horsemen in New York, winning six straight training titles (1993-98), he always spoke his mind. So after Moschera, 66, who retired in 2002, read in Saturday's Post that Rick Dutrow Jr., the trainer of Big Brown, basically accused him and several others of "juicing" their horses, the "Gasman" wanted to set the record straight.
"I never had a positive (in a 25-year career) so I don't like the idea he's talking like that," Moschera told The Post. "I take that as an insult, him putting me in that category. That's one of the reasons I got out of the business, because they made Lasix legal, and that opened the door for all the drugs. Ever since then, nothing was the same.
"Dutrow, they shouldn't test his horses, they should test him. Here's a guy that God blessed him, gave him a talent, and here he is throwing it out the window, talking negative about people. Instead of being grateful and thanking God for what he's got, he's acting like a real [jerk].
"And it's all going to be taken away from him," Moschera continued. "It will take time, but it will all be taken away. When you don't have nothing, and it's taken away, you don't miss nothing. But when you have everything - money, success - and it's taken away, you want to jump off a bridge.
"I have no problem with Dutrow. I wish him all the luck. But he should thank God, and shut his mouth. He talks like a jerk, but he can talk intelligent, too. He's got a brain, but it's all being thrown away. I don't know how his owners stay with him.
"He should watch 'The Godfather,' and he'll learn about what to say and what not to say. Just because you don't like someone, don't let them know it. Never let anybody outside the family know what you're thinking."
