Three members of the Colombo crime family ruthlessly killed a pal who just wanted to start a new life - for fear that he might turn rat, authorities say.

Ex-Marine Richard Greaves was allegedly lured to his death on Aug. 3, 1995, prosecutors say. His remains haven't been found.

"Greaves wanted to leave the life and move to the Midwest," a source said. "But they were afraid he'd become a weak link."

Mob captain "Big Dino" Calabro and soldiers "Dino Little" Saracino and "Joey Caves" Competiello were charged with the murder last week in Brooklyn.

Greaves knew about their role in the 1991 whacking of Frank Marasa for killing a Colombo associate in a beef over a woman, a source said.

Calabro was charged this month with the murder of Marasa, armored-truck driver Carlos Pagan and two others. Competiello and acting boss Thomas "Tommy Shots" Gioeli are charged in Marasa's death and Saracino in the Greaves and Marasa slayings.
