With ridership on city subways continuing to skyrocket, NYC Transit plans to add service on nine lines starting July 27 to help meet the growing demand, officials said.

The improvements will affect the 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, B, M and W lines, along with the 42nd Street Shuttle.

"This is simply trying to give people enough space," said NYCT President Howard Roberts. Under the plan, NYCT will:

* Add 10 extra weekday trains on the 4 line and the 42nd Street shuttle.

* Operate six additional weekday trains on the 1 and 6 lines.

* Add an extra weekday train on the 3 and W lines.

* Operate 14 additional weekend trains on the 7 line.

The improvement plans will cost $8.9 million a year and call for expanding overnight service on the 3, B, M and W lines.
