The number of eateries shuttered by the city's food cops has plummeted.

The city closed down 291 restaurants between February and April, a 57 percent decrease from the 678 in the same period last year, according to the Health Department.

The crackdown began in February 2007 after embarrassing video footage showed rats running rampant in a Greenwich Village KFC/Taco Bell that had just passed inspection.

New York Restaurant Association head Chuck Hunt said the latest figures proved that the industry was "doing a better job."
