Kevin Youkilis hit a two-run home run off of Mike Parisi in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals yesterday in Boston.
Mike Lowell led off the inning with a single off Parisi (0-3) before Youkilis hit Parisi's 3-1 offering over the left-field wall.
The Red Sox avoided being swept in a series at home for the first time since losing two games to the Blue Jays last April 23-24.
The Cardinals had a chance to take the lead in the top of the 13th off Javier Lopez (2-0), but Chris Duncan was thrown out at home plate by Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew.
Angels 3, Phillies 2
In Philadelphia, Jered Weaver held the Phillies in check into the sixth inning, Casey Kotchman homered and the Angels completed a three-game sweep.
Weaver (7-7) allowed one run and four hits in 51/3 innings for AL West-leading Los Angeles, which has won eight of its last nine road games.
Astros 3, Rays 2
In St. Petersburg, Fla., Carlos Lee hit a go-ahead two-run homer and Brandon Backe pitched into the seventh inning to stop a personal three-game losing streak, helping the Astros beat the Rays.
The Astros went ahead on Lee's two-out shot off Scott Kazmir in the sixth, and Backe and the bullpen made the 3-2 lead stand up. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 18th save.
Braves 8, Mariners 3
In Atlanta, Mark Teixeira homered three times, connecting from both sides of the plate to ignite the Braves.
Teixeira hit solo drives batting left-handed in the second and fourth innings, and a two-run shot from the right side in the seventh for his 13th homer of the season. It was his second career three-homer game and the first for an Atlanta player at Turner Field.
Twins 5, D'backs 3
In Minneapolis, Brian Buscher had two hits and drove in two runs, helping the Twins beat struggling Brandon Webb.
Webb (11-4) gave up five runs - four earned - on eight hits in seven innings. The 2006 NL Cy Young winner started the season 9-0, but is 2-4 with a 4.64 ERA since.
Athletics 7, Marlins 1
In Oakland, Justin Duchscherer (8-4) bounced back from a first-inning home run to win his fourth straight start, Emil Brown hit a two-run single and the Athletics won the rubber game.
Cubs 7, White Sox 1
In Chicago, Ryan Dempster (9-2) won his ninth straight this season at Wrigley Field and Eric Patterson and Aramis Ramirez homered in the same inning for the Cubs, who finished off a three-game sweep of their crosstown rivals.
The Cubs, owners of the best record in the majors (48-28), won their 14th straight home game to go 32-8 at Wrigley Field this season.
Dodgers 4, Indians 3
In Los Angeles, Russell Martin capped a four-run first inning with a two-run homer and the Dodgers beat the Indians to avoid a three-game sweep in the first series between the teams at Chavez Ravine.
Royals 11, Giants 10
In Kansas City, Mike Aviles had three RBIs and Joey Gathright drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, capping an eight-run comeback to lead the Royals.
Brewers 7, Orioles 3
In Milwaukee, Prince Fielder hit two home runs, Corey Hart and Bill Hall also went deep to lead the Brewers to their sixth win in seven games.
Blue Jays 8, Pirates 5
In Pittsburgh, Cito Gaston earned his first win as Blue Jays manager in 11 years, getting home runs from Scott Rolen and Adam Lind in a victory over the Pirates.
Rangers 5, Nationals 3
In Washington, Frank Catalanotto delivered a tiebreaking, pinch-hit single in the eighth inning to propel the Rangers.
Tigers 5, Padres 3
In San Diego, Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run homer, Justin Verlander won his first road game of the season to lead the Tigers to a victory in the rubber-game of a three-game series.
