'SUICIDE' GUN-TUTOR DISARMED

By PHILIP MESSING

June 23, 2008

The NYPD has yanked the credentials of an instructor at a Chelsea firing range for "failing to supervise" a UN staffer's 20-year-old son before the young man shot himself in the head with a high-powered rifle earlier this month, The Post has learned.

The NYPD License Division moved on June 6 to suspend a "handgun premise license" and a "rifle/shotgun permit" issued to Byian Johnson, 45, a firearms instructor at the West Side Rifle and Pistol Range on West 20th Street.

The disciplinary action came after License Division investigators determined Johnson failed to exercise proper care in watching over Patrick Karorero, who bought ammunition and rented a rifle from him before killing himself on June 2, sources said.

A woman who identified herself as Johnson's assistant at the Chelsea gun range said yesterday that he was out of the office and was on a "special assignment."

Johnson, of the Upper West Side, can no longer legally handle guns or tutor others in their use, sources say.
