Sticking with a New York theme, Davey Johnson and Tino Martinez will manage the Futures game next month as part of the All-Star festivities at Yankee Stadium.
Johnson, who managed the Mets to the 1986 World Series title, will guide the USA Olympic trial team in the exhibition July 13. In August, he will lead the U.S. squad in the Beijing Games.
Martinez, a former star for the Yankees, will handle the World squad of top minor leaguers in the nine-inning Futures game. In the past, the event usually lasted seven innings.
The major league All-Star game will be held July 15, highlighting the final season at Yankee Stadium.
Johnson was an All-Star second baseman and Gold Glove winner in 13 seasons as a big leaguer. He made his biggest mark in New York in 1986 when he managed the Mets to 108 victories in the regular season, then beat Boston in Game 7 to win the championship.
Johnson managed 14 years in the majors with the Mets, Cincinnati, Baltimore and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has coached and managed for USA Baseball since 2005.
Martinez helped the Yankees win four World Series championships. The first baseman hit .271 with 339 home runs and 1,271 RBIs in 16 seasons in the majors.
Martinez now works as a special assistant to Yankees manager Brian Cashman.
