D-DAY LOOMS FOR TRANS-FATS

AP

June 17, 2008

The time for restaurant reckoning is near.

The Health Department says the final phase of the city's trans-fat regulation will take effect July 1 - requiring all eateries to remove all artificial trans fats from all menu items.

When first implemented last year, the new standard applied only to fry oils and spreads. It now will also include baked goods, frozen foods, cannoli and doughnuts.

Still exempt will be candy, crackers and other foods served in the manufacturers' original, sealed packaging.

The Health Department says about 98 percent of inspected restaurants were in compliance as of last month.
