Skyway robbery went into effect yesterday at local airports, where American Airlines, one of the nation's largest carriers, began charging passengers $15 to check a single bag.

Soaring fuel prices and a bad economy have made the skies less friendly than ever.

"It's outrageous," said Nieya Wallace, 33, a passenger at La Guardia Airport on her way home to Nashville, Tenn.

United Airlines announced last week that its $15 first-bag fee for domestic flights will take off Aug. 18 or later.

Southwest Airlines is the only US carrier that permits two checked bags with no additional charge.
