SETBACK IN 'ROID PROBE

By ALEX GINSBERG

June 12, 2008

The Brooklyn DA's office has pulled the plug on the bombshell grand-jury investigation into an illegal steroid ring that sold to NYPD officers, and demoted the prosecutor in charge to the office's gun bureau, The Post has learned.

The move to withdraw the case from the grand jury means that a new prosecution team must now seek permission from a judge to again present two months' worth of witnesses and evidence to a new panel.

According to a source familiar with the probe, the assistant DA handling the matter, Kyle Reeves, quarreled with another prosecutor on the case, Monique Ferrel, over investigative strategy.

Reeves' decision to cut deals with particular targets of the probe, and to go after others, were one source of friction, according to a source.

Ferrel did not return a message left at her office and Reeves declined comment.
