REV'S BAIL BID FOR LILLO

By DENISE BUFFA

June 12, 2008

Former "Sopranos" actor and accused cop killer Lillo Brancato has enlisted a cast of characters - including a movie producer and a Catholic priest - in a bid to get out of Rikers Island, where he's been awaiting trial for more than two years.

"Although I am not as familiar with evidence as the court is - in my heart I believe Mr. Brancato was in the wrong place at the wrong time," wrote Hollywood honcho Michael Bregman, who produced "Carlito's Way," in a letter filed yesterday with a Bronx Supreme Court administrative judge.

He and others are urging the judge to set bail so Brancato, 31, can await trial in the December 2005 shooting death of off-duty Police Officer Daniel Enchautegui at his parents' home in Yonkers.

"Throughout this period, Lillo has shown true compassion at the death of the officer," wrote the Rev. Chorbishop John Faris, who has visited him at Rikers.

Brancato and Steven Armento are accused of gunning down Enchautegui when the off-duty officer tried to foil a burglary next door to his home.
