HUDSON PIER EYED FOR SCHOOL

By YOAV GONEN

June 12, 2008

Education officials yesterday said they'd like to build a 1,650-seat high school at Pier 40 off the Hudson River in downtown Manhattan.

In a letter to the Hudson River Park Trust, the city's Department of Education said it would need 150,000 square feet for the school - or possibly two smaller high schools instead.

The 14-acre property, which was formerly used by Holland America Line cruise ships, is now the site of soccer and baseball fields, other recreational facilities and a parking garage.

The pier, which was built in 1963, is situated off West Houston Street.
