Cindy McCain vowed to be an active first lady if her husband John is elected president, but said she won't try to use her position to influence administration policy.

"I have experience on the front lines. But I'm not here to legislate," Cindy McCain, 54, told donors Tuesday at the National Women's Republican Club in Midtown.

That suggests that Cindy would be a traditional first lady in the mode of Laura Bush rather than Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was the point person for President Bill Clinton's failed health-care initiative.

"Cindy relates to women on a very personal level. She doesn't talk politics," said attendee Georgette Mosbacher.

Cindy McCain travels the globe on behalf of charitable causes, including Operation Smile, which provides facial surgery to children, and the anti-poverty group CARE USA.
