NBA: Del Negro offered Bulls job

Vinny Del Negro has been offered the Bulls head coaching job, according to a person within the league who is familiar with the situation. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because an announcement had not been made yesterday.

* Michael Curry will be introduced today as the next coach of the Pistons after having played for the team and worked as an assistant . . . Gilbert Arenas lived up to his word and opted out of the final year of his contract, the Wizards said yesterday. The move had been long expected. The three-time All-Star repeatedly can begin negotiating with any team on July 1.

NFL: Bears waive Benson

Bears running back Cedric Benson has been released following his second alcohol-related arrest in a month. GM Jerry Angelo said yesterday that Benson displayed a pattern of behavior that the team will not tolerate.

* Coach Mike Holmgren missed the Seahawks' minicamp practice yesterday with what a team spokesman emphasized was a minor medical procedure of an undisclosed nature.

* Terrell Owens acknowledged having missed a random drug test several weeks ago, blaming it on a "communication problem involving cell phone numbers."

BLOTTER: Stabler nabbed for DUI

Former NFL star quarterback Ken Stabler was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. Stabler, 62, now a radio analyst for University of Alabama football, was released from jail on $1,000 bond nearly 13 hours after his arrest, police said yesterday.

CWS: LSU heading to Omaha

Ryan Schimpf homered twice and drove in five runs as LSU routed UC Irvine 21-7 last night in Baton Rouge to earn a trip to the College World Series. The Tigers (48-17-1) will take on North Carolina in the opening round of the College World Series this weekend.

GOLF: AT&T Classic leaves Atlanta

Atlanta's TPC Sugarloaf is losing the AT&T Classic but apparently will be home to a new Champions Tour event. The PGA Tour announced the AT&T Classic will not return to Atlanta in 2009. The tournament, formerly known as the BellSouth Classic, lost AT&T as its title sponsor in December.
