Detectives investigating the stabbing death of a woman in her Chelsea apartment questioned her boyfriend for hours yesterday, sources said.

Robert Campanaro, 61, had initially told cops that he came home Sunday night and found a mortally wounded Michelle Hyams bleeding in their bedroom of their Eighth Avenue apartment.

Campanaro, an ex-con with a lengthy rap sheet, then started trying to change his story and requested a lawyer.

A knife was recovered at the scene. It appeared to have been wiped clean.

During questioning, Campanaro flipped out, breaking a station-house chair and a window, police said. He was charged with criminal mischief. Then, at his arraignment, he went berserk again and was taken to Bellevue.

As he was led from the precinct house for his arraignment, he asked a reporter, "Is my wife alive? Just tell me, is she alive?"

Asked if he killed the 60-year-old Hyams, he replied, "No, I wasn't even there . . . There are so many weirdos in that neighborhood."
