First Lady Laura Bush yesterday came to the defense of Michelle Obama for saying earlier this year that "for the first time" in her adult life she was proud of America.
"I think she probably meant, 'I'm more proud,' " said Bush, traveling across Europe with her husband.
And on ABC's "Good Morning America," she cautioned, "You have to be very careful in what you say on the campaign trail.
"That's one of the really difficult parts both of running for president and for being the spouse of the president, and that is everything you say is looked at and, in many cases, misconstrued."
She also praised Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying she "admired Hillary's grit and strength."
