NABES HIT BY SPIKES IN CRIME

By JAMIE SCHRAM AND ANDY GELLER

June 9, 2008

Seven precincts have recorded double-digit crime hikes this year - including Staten Island's usually tranquil Tottenville, new NYPD statistics reveal.

Compared to the same period last year, the increases range from 29 percent in Tottenville's 123rd Precinct to 10 percent in the 45th Precinct in The Bronx's Throgs Neck.

East Harlem's 23rd Precinct and Williamsburg's 90th, in Brooklyn, saw 17 percent jumps, followed by 16 percent in the Rockaways' 100th Precinct, 12 percent in the South Bronx's 41st, and 11 percent in New Dorp's 122nd in Staten Island.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Collins noted that the city's overall crime rate continued to decline, falling 3 percent in a year.

"When crime spikes do occur, they are immediately addressed," he said.

The stats - based on murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, grand larceny and auto theft - are through June 1.

Tottenville saw a 100 percent rise in rape and robbery. There were two rapes in the 123rd, compared with one last year, and 12 robberies, after just six in 2007.
