Only a handful of all graffiti convictions in the city leads to a jail sentence or even a fine.
Last year, 31 of the 392 people convicted of charges growing out of their acts of vandalism actually served jail time - just 8 percent.
Another 24 people were hit with a fine.
Almost all of the vandals are charged with making graffiti, a misdemeanor. Vandals who do extensive damage can be charged with criminal mischief, a felony.
Misdemeanor graffiti arrests soared from 263 in 2003 to 773 last year.
