Scandal-scarred Ehud Olmert knows his days as Israel's prime minister are numbered and is weighing a plan by senior members of his party to name his successor, it was reported yesterday.
Members of the Kadima party said they will convene after Olmert returns from a US visit next week to consider calling for new leadership in the wake of disclosures by Long Island businessman Morris Talansky that he gave Olmert $150,000 in apparently illegal payments.
Sources close to Olmert told the Jerusalem Post he may allow a Kadima primary.
"We can remove Olmert without being brutal," a senior party official said.
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni would win a primary if held today, according to a poll reported by the newspaper Yediot Achronoth yesterday.
