UPSTATE BEER 'FIRE BREWED'

AP

May 31, 2008

UTICA - The brewery that makes Saranac beer and ale will have to truck the brew to another site after a fire caused at least $10 million in damage and destroyed its bottling and canning operation.

"It didn't affect our actual brewing or fermenting operations," said Nicholas Matt, president of the upstate Matt Brewing Co. "We'll get it packaged one way or another."

A welding repair job might have triggered the fire, which broke out around 5 p.m. Thursday.

The two employees doing the welding were treated for smoke inhalation and released.
