A pack of muggers in Washington Heights picked the wrong victims last night - off duty cops who shot one of them, a police source said.
The violence took place just after midnight at 164th Street and Amersterdam Avenue when as many as ten thugs surrounded the officers and demanded money. When the cops resisted, someone in the gang picked up a chair and used it to bash an officer on the head.
That's when one of the officers fired, hitting a mugger in the neck, the source said. The cop was taken to Bellevue Hospital; the suspect to Harlem Hospital. Three were arrested.
