WEIRD BUT TRUE

Houston, we have a potty problem.

The only toilet on the International Space Station is broken and the shuttle Discovery may have to serve as an out-of this-word plumbing van.

The Russian-made toilet's motor fan went on the fritz last week, and the crew has been doing the business necessary for all mankind on the Soyuz return capsule.

NASA says it may send parts via Discovery, but that's tricky, due to payload limitations.

It's the kind of freebie nobody would want.

A scorpion that had stowed away in a fruit shipment from Mexico stung a 12-year-old girl picking up a watermelon at the Wal-Mart in Barboursville, W.Va.

The girl, Megan Templeton was fine. Wal-Mart officials called it a "very rare incident."

There are perks to every job.

A Michigan cop investigating an apparent break-in ended up with a free dinner when he found that a 10-pound turkey had smashed its way through the window of a Kalamazoo store. The turkey died on impact.

Some people have a lot of time on their hands.

Kevin Whittaker and Cory Jens of San Francisco made a bid for the world record by shaking hands for 91/2 hours - which appears to shatter the previous record by 30 minutes.

"I looked up what some of the weakest records were," Whittaker said. "I'm not going to break the 100-meter dash record, but I thought I could break this record."

In this case, the cheese cut them.

Nineteen English louts were hospitalized following an annual event in which foolhardy participants roll down a hill after giant wheels of cheese.
