Former New Jersey Assemblyman Mims Hackett Jr. pleaded guilty in federal court in Newark yesterday to one federal corruption charge, hours after he resigned as mayor of Orange.
He had been charged with taking a $5,000 bribe to steer a city contract to an insurance broker.
The 66-year-old Hackett was among 12 people, including 11 public officials, arrested last fall on federal bribery charges.
Hackett has also been charged with official misconduct by the state for allegedly billing the city for expenses he never incurred.
Under a plea deal reached with state and federal prosecutors, Hackett is expected to face a total of 18 to 24 months in federal prison, his attorney said.
