MOM'S DAY SHOCK: BABY ABANDONED

By JAMIE SCHRAM and FRANK ROSARIO

May 12, 2008

A baby was found abandoned on Mother's Day outside a Queens home, police said last night.

Neighbors heard the cries of the girl, who is about 1 to 2 months old and appears to be Asian, coming from the steps of the house on Holly Street in Flushing at about 10 p.m.

It was unclear who left her there or why.

The baby was swaddled in clothing to protect her from the unseasonably cool Mother's Day weather.

"Of all days. It's unbelievable," said one shocked officer.

Dorothy Woo, who lives nearby, said the infant may have been wrapped in a trash bag.

"I don't know what drives a mother to give away her child on a day like today," she said.

"We should keep them close, not give them away."

The baby was in stable condition at Flushing Hospital and expected to survive.
