'SPEED' EATS 'IRON' DUST

By NEIL GRAVES

May 12, 2008

"Iron Man" beat up on the competition for the second straight week, as the superhero scored a solid $50.5 million at the box office to remain No 1.

Racking up $220 million worldwide in just two weeks, the Robert Downey Jr. film, about a rich industrialist who invents a high-tech getup to combat bad guys, easily bested "Speed Racer," which opened in second, with $20.2 million.

"Speed Racer," a little-engine-that-could tale about a race-car driver battling "the corporation," was marketed from the rooftops to kids and their parents - but didn't quite hit the finish line.

"We were disappointed with the results over the weekend," admitted Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. "We're hoping . . . the movie can turn it around."
