'TUTOR' $LAP ON PRINCIPAL

By YOAV GONEN

May 9, 2008

A veteran Manhattan principal will have to fork over $3,000 after investigators determined she got teachers to provide free tutoring to her daughters.

The city's Conflicts of Interest Board yesterday slapped MS 322 principal Erica Zigelman with the fine. Three teachers at MS 322 in Washington Heights had provided the lessons in math, English and Spanish in 2006 and 2007 without compensation in violation of city law.

Zigelman had initially blamed her misstep on snow days and a fear of sex offenders, according to a Feb. 8 letter written by District 6 Community Superintendent Martha Madera. Zigelman did not return a call seeking comment.
