Most commonly associated with Robert DeNiro and the film festival that bears its name, TriBeCa is a quiet, exclusive neighborhood that's known for stunning loft apartments that were converted from industrial buildings.
But new construction has altered this formerly mid-rise neighborhood. New condominiums include One York Street (which combines a pre-Civil War-era warehouse with a 14-story glass structure, with prices from about $1 million) and a 56-story residential tower at 56 Leonard St.
New developments have also brought big-box retail to the nabe, which has added to residents' quality of life while detracting somewhat from TriBeCa's aloof appeal. Skidmore, Owing and Merrill's 101 Warren boasts an impressive trifecta of Bed, Bath & Beyond, Barnes & Noble and Whole Foods. (The building also features 228 residential units and an elevated forest of 101 Austrian pine trees.)
Still, the more things change, the more they stay the same; some of the newer buildings, such as 414 and 415 Washington St., harmonize well with the neighborhood's older infrastructure. And, perhaps most notably, P.S. 234, TriBeca's local elementary, remains one of the top-rated schools in the city.
