Less neighborhood-y than Midtown West's Hell's Kitchen, Midtown East attracts a mix of foreign buyers (many of whom work at the nearby United Nations) as well as young professionals eager to walk to work.
Home to exclusive enclaves like Sutton Place, Midtown East has seen little new construction as a result of the real-estate boom, though there have been some recent condo conversions. Among them are 865 U.N. Plaza -- an 18-story building with studios and one-bedrooms ranging from $446,000 to $1.025 million -- and 212 E. 47th St., with prices from about $672,000.
An exception is the M at Beekman new development (343 E. 50th St.), which consists of 23 condos, created from four gutted townhouses. Units at the development are at about $1,200 a square foot -- though they can reach as high as about $1,800 a square foot.
Less exclusive real estate can be found in the eastern edges of Midtown East, including the Kips Bay area, where hospitals and high-rises dominate the landscape.
